Caustic Wash for Tank Cleaning in Oman: Strength, Temperature and Safety

A caustic wash is one of the most effective ways to remove fats, oils, food residues and many organic deposits from tanks, vessels and pipework. It is widely used in food and beverage plants, chemical storage, edible oil handling and industrial cleaning across Oman. Done well, it is fast and cheap. Done badly, it can damage equipment and injure people. This guide covers strength, temperature, contact time, materials and safety.

How a caustic wash works

Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) reacts with fats and oils to form soap, a process called saponification, which then washes away with water. It also breaks down proteins and many other organic residues. Heat speeds up all of these reactions, which is why caustic washes are usually done warm or hot.

Typical strengths and conditions

JobNaOH strengthTemperatureContact time
Routine food and beverage CIP0.5 to 2%70 to 85 °C15 to 30 minutes
Heavy fat and oil residues2 to 5%60 to 80 °C30 to 60 minutes
Soaking parts and small vessels3 to 5%WarmUntil clean, checked regularly

These are common starting points. Always follow the instructions of your equipment maker and the requirements of your process. As a guide, 10 g of 99% caustic soda flakes in one litre of water gives about 1%, and 50 g per litre gives about 5%.

Step by step

  1. Pre-rinse the tank with water to remove loose product.
  2. Prepare the solution by adding flakes slowly to water while stirring, never water to flakes.
  3. Circulate or spray the warm solution over all internal surfaces for the planned time.
  4. Drain and collect the spent caustic for neutralisation or reuse where allowed.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water until the rinse water is close to neutral pH.
  6. Acid rinse if needed to remove mineral scale and neutralise remaining alkali, then a final water rinse.
  7. Inspect before returning the tank to service.

Materials: what caustic attacks

  • Safe: carbon steel, stainless steel, polypropylene and HDPE are generally suitable for caustic washes.
  • Not safe: aluminium, zinc, galvanised steel, tin and some alloys. Caustic attacks these metals and releases hydrogen gas, which is flammable and can build up in closed tanks.
  • Check: gaskets, seals and linings. Some rubbers and coatings degrade in hot caustic.

Safety essentials

  • Wear splash goggles with a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, boots and an apron or suit.
  • Keep an eyewash or plenty of clean water at the work area. Rinse eye contact for at least 15 minutes.
  • Treat tank entry as confined-space work: isolate, ventilate, test the atmosphere and use a permit.
  • Never mix caustic with acids in the same tank without control; the reaction is violent and hot.
  • Neutralise and dispose of spent solutions according to local regulations.

Getting caustic soda in Oman

Most tank cleaning teams prefer flakes because they store well and can be mixed to any strength on site. Muscat Chemical keeps caustic soda in 25 kg bags as ready stock in Barka, with the day's price, the SDS and a sample certificate of analysis online, and next-day delivery across Oman.
