Tall Oil (Crude Cleaning Procedure)
Tall oil is an oxidizing oil and through reaction with oxygen of the atmosphere
it dries and hardens (drying oil). Oxidation occurs in three phases: liquid, gum
and solid. Tank cleaning should be therefore executed as soon as possible after discharge.
- Butter worth the tank 1 hour with hot seawater (60-70° C.)
- Butter worth the tank 1 hour with hot seawater (75° C.). Check if the
tank is free of sediments before recirculation cleaning will be started. - Flush the tank 10 minutes with fresh water to remove the
residues of seawater. - Prepare on of the following cleaning solution with fresh water :
- 0.4% RXSOL CTC -VOLC
- 0.4% RXSOL CTC-VOLC
- 2.5% Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide
- 5% RXSOL AL 2005
5. Butter worth the tank 1, 5 hour by recirculation.
6. Butter worth the tank 1 hour with hot seawater (70-80° C.) Rinse the tank
with fresh water
7. Butter worth the tank 1 hour with hot seawater (70-80° C.)
8. Rinse the tank with fresh water
9. Ventilate, mop and dry the tank. Inspect the tank: Depending on the
Fatty Acid and Resin Acid content of the Crude Tall Oil it might be
possible that some minor spots of sticky brownish residues are present.
10. To remove these residues Butter worth the tank with one of the following
solution:
- 3-5% phosphoric acid and 0.4% RXSOL CTC-VOLC; or
- 3-5% nitric acid and 0.4% RXSOL CTC VOLC; or
- 2-5% of a metallic brightener (RXSOL MB 1011) and 0.4% RXSOL CTC-
VOLC The cleaning temperature should be moderate (50°C.) Use heating coils not the Butter worth heater.
11. Butter worth the tank 0, 5 hours with fresh water

- 5% RXSOL AL 2005 Butter worth the tank 2.0 hour by recirculation. The
cleaning temperature should be approx 60°C (not higher).
17. Butter worth the tank 1 hour with hot seawater (70-80°C.)
18. Rinse the tank with fresh water
19. Ventilate, mop and dry the tank continued Inspect the tank: Depending on
the Fatty Acid and Resin Acid content of the Crude Tall Oil it might be
possible that some minor spots of sticky brownish residues are present.
